Who’s Your Valentine?
One of my favorite lizard facts is that some species, like the Chihuahuan spotted whiptail, Aspidoscelis exsanguis, are parthenogenic.
Parthenogenesis is a form of reproduction where the females reproduce asexually. Their offspring are clones of themselves.
Interestingly, other parthenogenic whiptail species, like Aspidoscelis uniparens, have been observed engaging in pseudo-copulation, mate-like behavior in which females mount each other.
This behavior is associated with their ovulation cycle and mounted females experience an increase in fecundity (their ability to produce offspring).
