The Side Blotched Lizard

The side blotched lizard, Uta stanisburiana, is aptly named for the dark black inky spot right under its armpit.

In addition to their inky blotch, side blotched lizards can have a genetically based throat colors of orange, blue, or yellow.

These throat colors can suggest the behaviors we may see from the lizards. For instance, females with orange throats tend to be more aggressive.

The behaviors between females and those between males, determine which morph (orange, blue or yellow throat), the females will choose to mate with.

Lizard society and reproduction gets complicated!
