The Western Banded Gecko

Like many other lizards, the western banded gecko (Coleonyx variegatus), can drop it’s tail when threatened by a predator. However, losing their tail could mean a life or death fight for this nocturnal species.

In the photo above, you can see this lizard has a really fat tail.   In addition to it taking a lot of energy to regrow their tails, they essentially use their tails as a pantry and canteen, storing food and water there for times when the Mojave Desert offers little resources.
