An Exercise in Imagination

This week I attended the Hollywood Climate Summit. The panels at this event explored the harmful effects of media productions on our environment, the steps various companies and productions are taking to become more sustainable, and climate solutions that we can all adopt.

Across all the panels I attended, one question was always asked: “What can people do to help the climate?”

This is what I learned:

  1. Talk about the issues. They aren’t going away because we ignore them. It’s up to each of us to stop climate change.

  2. Start to imagine what the world could look like if society focused on supporting life on Earth as opposed to making money. There are more than enough resources on Earth for everyone to live well. What if that was the goal? If that was what our definition of progress was? Can you imagine that world? It does not have to be perfect, and you don’t have to have all the answers, but we only do the things we believe can be done. If you start to believe it’s possible, then that’s the first step to making that kind of world a reality.

  3. Start small, start local, start with organizations that are already doing the work. Living more sustainably is a community effort. Consider volunteering with local organizations that are growing food, providing wellness resources, conducting beach clean-ups, hosting bioblitzes (biodiversity surveys), engaging in advocacy work, and other climate-focused activities. You don’t have to start something new, and you aren’t alone in this.

Imagine a world where sustainability and conservation aren’t things we actively do, it’s just the way we live. Share in the comments what that world could look like for you.

Can you #FindThatLizard? It’s our fave diva, the western fence lizard, Sceloporus occidentalis.

Let me know in the comments if you #FoundThatLizard.
