Where Ceramics and Herpetology Collide

About
the artist

Dr. Earyn McGee is an emerging artist working out of Los Angeles. Her practice reflects her interdisciplinary background as an artist, scientist, and community builder.

She fell in love with ceramics during her sophomore year at Howard University when she enrolled in Ceramics I. Dr. McGee, ever interested in developing a relationship with the Earth, looked at this as a new opportunity to deepen that connection. She enjoyed experimenting with different glazes to tell stories.

She began a formal ceramic practice while a graduate student during the pandemic. Her academic training is as a herpetologist, someone who studies reptiles and amphibians. She quickly realized that she could use her art as another tool to teach people about lizards, conservation, and how they can make a difference.

Dr. McGee believes we can solve the climate crisis and other environmental issues by pursuing joy. She hopes her work can help her community, especially other Black people, make stronger and long lasting connections with nature.
